Abstract

This study aims to analyze the orthographic elements found in the fourth volume of the Iqro’ book and to explore the possibility of employing them in dictation exercises to develop Arabic writing skills, especially for non-native Arabic learners. The significance of this research lies in the widespread use of the Iqro’ book in teaching Qur’anic reading in Indonesia, while its potential role in teaching writing and dictation skills has received limited academic attention, despite the presence of various orthographic features within its content. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach based on library research. The primary data source was the fourth volume of the Iqro’ book, which was analyzed to identify and classify orthographic elements and relate them to appropriate instructional dictation activities. In addition, several references concerning Arabic orthography, writing skills, and methods of teaching Arabic were consulted to support the analysis and interpretation. The findings reveal that the fourth volume of the Iqro’ book contains various important orthographic elements, including the three types of tanween, the distinction between alif maqsurah and ya’, and the rules of writing hamzah in different positions. The study also demonstrates that these elements can be effectively transformed into graded dictation exercises, such as copied dictation, visual dictation, and auditory dictation, which help learners acquire accurate Arabic writing skills systematically and practically. Therefore, the study recommends enhancing the use of commonly used educational materials, such as the Iqro’ book, in teaching writing skills, as well as providing training programs for teachers on designing effective dictation exercises based on the educational content of these materials
