Abstract

This study investigates the role of native Arabic speakers in developing listening skills among non-native learners at the beginner level in Institut Muslim Cendekia, motivated by the limited exposure learners receive to authentic Arabic in formal educational contexts. A qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews with students and native speakers, alongside field observations within the university environment. Data were analyzed descriptively to identify interaction patterns and their impact on listening competence. The findings reveal four integrated roles played by native speakers: they serve as a natural linguistic source and accurate phonetic model that helps students distinguish Arabic sounds and acquire correct pronunciation; as facilitators of listening comprehension through discourse simplification, repetition, synonyms, and examples; as effective teachers who correct linguistic errors and connect language to real-world usage; and as linguistic motivators who enhance students' learning drive and reduce communication anxiety. The effectiveness of these roles was found to depend significantly on the native speaker's ability to adapt their language to learners' proficiency levels. The study concludes that designing learning environments which maximize direct interaction between learners and native speakers is essential for enhancing communicative competence and improving comprehension of spoken Arabic.
