A Model of Personal Communication Between Parents and Children Through Luqman's Advice in the Qur'an and Its Role in Shaping Children's Personalities

Abstract
The father plays a crucial role in shaping the personality of a child. However, in contemporary reality, the educational role of the father tends to be in decline. Fathers are often limited to fulfilling the family’s economic needs, which indicates a lack of involvement in direct parenting and in providing emotional support to the child. This study aims to identify the model of personal communication between father and child based on Luqman's advice in the Qur'an, and to examine how the values contained therein can be applied in the development of a child's character. The research employs a descriptive-analytical method, drawing on various sources including classical exegesis literature, previous studies, scholarly articles, and legal frameworks related to educational methods and the formation of Islamic character. The findings indicate that the personal communication model illustrated in Luqman's advice comprises six principal approaches: compassion and gentleness, sound exhortation, gradual instruction, repetition, motivation and warning, and the use of analogies. Based on these six approaches, the researcher derives several practical methods for character development in children, including: providing emotional support, giving guidance with gentleness, engaging the child in calm and participatory dialogue; offering advice with kindness and setting a concrete example; applying gradualism in education; repeating guidance consistently at different times; balancing motivation with cautionary advice; and using simple, familiar analogies that are easily understood by the child.
