Abstract
The teaching and learning of the Arabic language require various factors that contribute to successful learning outcomes. One of the most important factors is the environment in which learners of the language live. This study aims to examine how the dormitory system involving students from different linguistic backgrounds living in the same room is implemented, as well as the effect of this dormitory system on the development of Arabic speaking skills among students at Arrayah University. This study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design and used a questionnaire as the instrument for data collection from a sample of students residing in the university dormitory. The dormitory system is implemented by distributing students into rooms based on specific criteria, ensuring that students from the same region or the same linguistic background are not placed in one room. If this arrangement is not possible, students are selected from the same region but from different tribes, origins, or sub-regions. The results of the simple linear regression analysis revealed a statistically significant effect of the dormitory system on the development of students’ Arabic speaking skills, with a significance value of 0.00963, which is lower than 0.05. The findings also showed that the dormitory system contributes 18.6% to supporting the language environment and encouraging students to practice Arabic, especially speaking skills, in their daily lives.
