Abstract
Teaching’Arabic to non-native speakers is an important field, and this study focuses on teaching them reading skills in light of differences in linguistic systems. The aim of this study was to identify the difficulties female students faced in learning to read using the textbook Between Your Hands, Part Three from the series Teaching Arabic to Non-Native Speakers, and to describe teaching strategies for addressing these difficulties among female students in the Department of Language Preparation at Institut Muslim Cendekia. The researchers adopted a qualitative descriptive approach due to its suitability for studying educational phenomena in their real-world context and analyzing them through a systematic, scientific framework. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed through the stages of data collection, reduction, presentation, and the derivation and verification of findings. The research findings revealed that female students in the Language Preparation Department face multiple difficulties in learning reading, most notably: difficulty understanding new vocabulary, distinguishing between words with similar meanings, grasping the overall meaning of a text, and applying vocabulary in daily life, in addition to difficulty understanding complex structures and sentences. The results also revealed that teachers used several instructional strategies to address these difficulties, the most important of which were: the interactive strategy, the SQ3R strategy, and the vocabulary pre-teaching strategy. These strategies contributed to stimulating student participation, facilitating comprehension of the texts read, and gradually improving their reading’comprehension.
