Abstract
This study examines the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka in Arabic language teaching to develop students’ oral communicative skills at the junior secondary level. The study is motivated by the growing need for communicative Arabic learning in Indonesian Islamic educational institutions, particularly amid the educational transformation promoted through the Kurikulum Merdeka, which emphasizes competency-based and student-centered learning. This research aims to describe the implementation of the curriculum in Arabic language instruction and analyze its contribution to the development of students’ oral communicative competence. The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach through field research conducted at an Islamic boarding school-based junior secondary institution in Sukabumi. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews with Arabic teachers and students, and documentation analysis. The findings reveal that the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka supports the development of oral communicative skills through interactive learning strategies, contextual speaking practices, and the creation of a supportive Arabic-speaking environment. The use of communicative-oriented teaching materials and flexible instructional approaches also contributed positively to students’ participation and speaking confidence. This study contributes to the discourse on communicative Arabic language teaching and provides practical insights into the implementation of the Kurikulum Merdeka in pesantren-based educational contexts.
