Abstract
This study aims to examine the role of prescribed Arabic texts issued by the Ministry of Religious Affairs in developing reading skills among second-grade students at State Senior High School 12 Jakarta. The focus includes vocabulary development, understanding main ideas, identifying detailed information, inferring meaning from context, and increasing reading motivation and confidence. A descriptive qualitative method was employed. Data were collected through interviews with one Arabic language teacher and document analysis of the official Arabic textbook and relevant literature. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the prescribed texts play an important role in improving students’ reading comprehension. They help expand vocabulary through contextual exposure, enhance understanding of main ideas and supporting details through structured classroom activities, and improve students’ ability to infer meanings of unfamiliar words from context. In addition, the texts increase students’ motivation and confidence in reading Arabic by providing gradual and structured learning materials. The study concludes that prescribed texts are effective instructional resources that significantly contribute to the development of comprehensive reading skills in Arabic language learning.
