Abstract

Language exercises constitute a fundamental component in teaching Arabic to non-native speakers, as they assist learners in comprehending grammatical rules, consolidating vocabulary acquisition, and developing their overall linguistic competencies. This study aims to describe and analyze the types of exercises found in Durūs al-Lugah al-'Arabiyyah by Dr. F. Abd al-Rahim, examined through the framework of language exercises presented in Iḍā'āt li Mu'allimī al-'Arabiyyah li Ghayr al-Nāṭiqīna Bihā. This study employs a qualitative approach utilizing a descriptive-analytical method, with data collected through library research. The findings reveal that the total number of exercises in the book amounts to 117, distributed across twenty-three lessons, comprising 56 mechanical exercises, 60 meaning-based exercises, and only 1 communicative exercise. These findings indicate a relative balance between mechanical exercises and meaning-based exercises. However, the proportion of communicative exercises is considerably low in comparison to the other two categories, thereby suggesting the need to reinforce the communicative dimension of the book in order to achieve the objectives of Arabic language instruction for non-native speakers in a more comprehensive and effective manner.
