Abstract
Writing is a crucial productive skill in Arabic language learning at university, especially for Arabic Language Education students. However, students still face various challenges in developing ideas, systematically structuring paragraphs, and creating coherence in Arabic academic writing. This study aims to describe student writing practices and analyze the role of essay writing in improving Arabic writing skills among students in the Arabic Language Education Department at the Chendekia Muslim Institute in the 2025–2026 academic year. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study approach. Data collection was conducted through observation, semi-structured interviews with lecturers and students, and document analysis of student essays. Data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data validity was achieved through triangulation of sources and methods. The results indicate that student writing practices have not yet developed into a sustainable academic culture and are still dominated by coursework. Nevertheless, systematic essay writing plays a role in improving the ability to organize ideas, structure paragraphs, build text coherence, develop critical thinking, and increase students' motivation and confidence in writing Arabic. Thus, essay writing can be an effective strategy in developing Arabic academic writing skills.
