Abstract

This study explores the extent to which Al-Raayah University students practice self-directed learning strategies in developing their Arabic language skills, in light of the growing influence of technological advancements in education. The research stems from an observation that many students still rely heavily on traditional methods while neglecting modern self-learning strategies. A qualitative research approach was adopted, using observation and structured open-ended questionnaires. Data was collected from a random sample of students across levels and majors, then analyzed to identify trends and challenges. Findings revealed a general weakness in students’ commitment to self-directed learning. Most practices were irregular, with students leaning on traditional strategies like reading and listening, while underutilizing modern digital tools and educational technologies. Key challenges included low motivation, poor time management, and a lack of institutional support. Although some students reported encouragement from teachers, such guidance was inconsistent. The study recommends increasing awareness of the importance of self-directed learning, integrating supportive digital environments, and empowering educators to actively guide students toward effective and innovative learning strategies.
