The Effect of the Grammar-Translation Method on Teaching Arabic Vocabulary to Senior High School Students at Cikoneng Institute in the Academic Year 2025–2026

Abstract
Teaching vocabulary is considered one of the essential elements in learning the Arabic language, and the Grammar-Translation Method is regarded as one of the commonly used teaching methods in Islamic boarding schools due to its role in facilitating students’ understanding, memorization, and proper use of vocabulary. Based on this, this study aims to how the implementation and examine the effect of the Grammar-Translation Method (GTM) on Arabic vocabulary learning among secondary-level students at Cikoneng Islamic Boarding School, Bandung, for the academic year 2025–2026. Using a quantitative approach with a descriptive field research design, the study involved 48 secondary students as respondents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected via observation, interviews, and questionnaires, then analyzed using simple linear regression with SPSS and Excel software. The researcher concluded multiple results, the most prominent of which are: The application of the grammar-translation method in teaching Arabic vocabulary at the Chikoning Institute is carried out in an organized manner, as the teacher relies on explaining the rules, then presenting the vocabulary and clarifying their meanings through translation, along with training students to use them in different linguistic structures. The grammar-translation method has a strong impact on vocabulary teaching, as the results showed that the regression coefficient reached (B = 0.974) indicates a strong positive relationship between GTM application and vocabulary learning. The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.887) reveals that GTM explains 88.7% of the variance in vocabulary learning outcomes. The t-test value (t = 18.960, Sig = 0.000) confirms a statistically significant positive effect. It is concluded that the Grammar-Translation Method is an effective strategy for improving Arabic vocabulary mastery in Islamic boarding school environments.
