Abstract

Speaking skill is considered one of the most important language skills that reflects learners’ ability to communicate in Arabic. However, its teaching is not free from problems and challenges that affect the achievement of educational objectives. This study aims to analyze the problems in teaching speaking skills at Muslim Cendekia Institute in Sukabumi, West Java, Indonesia, with a focus on the problems faced by speaking skill teachers in the language preparatory program. The study employed a descriptive-analytical method, in which data were collected through interviews with teachers and document analysis, then analyzed descriptively to obtain the findings. The results showed that the problems are related to teaching methods and strategies, including teachers’ domination of class time and difficulties in managing interaction and correcting errors. There are also problems related to teachers and their qualifications, such as the absence of proper Arabic language models, weak skills in managing interactive activities, and cognitive as well as preparatory burdens. In addition, problems related to the learning environment were identified, most notably the weak language environment and the lack of interactive activities, which affect students’ motivation in the classroom. The study concludes that improving the teaching of speaking skills requires integrated development covering teaching strategies, enhancement of teachers’ competence, improvement of instructional materials, and reinforcement of the language environment inside and outside the classroom.
