Abstract

This study aims to identify the similarities and differences in punctuation marks between the Indonesian and Arabic languages. The research employs a descriptive-analytical method with a contrastive analysis approach, through an examination of punctuation rules in both languages. The findings reveal functional similarities in basic punctuation marks in terms of meaning organization. However, there are fundamental differences in three aspects: 1) Quantity; the Indonesian system adheres to 15 standardized marks according to the EYD V guidelines, while the Arabic system is dynamic in nature, having evolved from 10 basic marks to more than 20 marks in the modern era. 2) shape and direction; where some curved marks in Arabic (, ؟ ;) are mirrored to suit the direction of Arabic script. 3) Usage; such as the requirement to include the conjunction wawu athaf before a comma in enumerations, as well as differences in the function of the exclamation mark. The study recommends implementing a contrastive approach in teaching based on progressive stages, ranging from the mechanical stage to the free expression stage, to address the phenomenon of negative transfer from the mother tongue. The study concludes that applying a contrastive approach in teaching punctuation can contribute significantly to improving the Arabic writing skills of Indonesian learners. Therefore, it is recommended that punctuation instruction be explicitly and systematically integrated into Arabic writing curricula, accompanied by graduated practical exercises.
