Abstract
Despite the growing adoption of boarding school (pesantren-based) systems in Indonesian Islamic higher education, empirical evidence on student acceptance of such systems at the university level remains limited. This study addresses that gap by examining the level and factors of student acceptance of the boarding school system at Institut Muslim Cendekia (IMC), Sukabumi. A mixed-methods explanatory sequential design was employed. In the quantitative phase, a validated 15-item Likert-scale questionnaire (1–5) was administered to 89 first-year university students (from a population of 97) residing in the dormitory, selected through purposive sampling. In the qualitative phase, in-depth interviews, direct observation, and document analysis were conducted to deepen quantitative findings. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics; qualitative data were analyzed through thematic analysis with source and method triangulation. The total acceptance score was 6,149 out of a maximum of 6,675 points (92.12%), classified as 'very high acceptance' on the Likert scale (M = 4.6 per item). Marked differences emerged between students with prior boarding education experience (86%) and those without (14%), with the former exhibiting faster adaptation. Qualitative data confirmed that time discipline, Arabic language immersion, spiritual-character development, and a supportive peer environment were the primary drivers of acceptance. Interpreted through Reception Theory (Jauss, 1982) and Schema Theory (Bartlett, 1932; Anderson, 1984), these findings suggest that prior cognitive schemas significantly facilitate adaptation to boarding-based university education. The IMC boarding system demonstrates effectiveness as a holistic character-development model for Islamic higher education, with implications for institutional policy on student orientation programs and dormitory governance design.
