Abstract
Hadith of the Prophet is the second source of Islamic law after the Qur'an. The Hadīth of the Prophet has various word methods in which the Prophet Muhammad was given the advantage by Allah with a collection of words and the essence of law contained in one word. Hadith Al-arba`in An-Nawawiyah is a collection of hadith compiled by Imām Al-Nawawi which contains forty-two prophetic hadiths. The phenomenon of speech forms in the hadith of Al-arba`īn An-Nawawiyah uses different sentences, and various word methods, One of them is the Istifhām method. This study discusses the meaning of Istifhām and its devices, and mentions the hadith that contains Uslūb Al-Istifhām in the hadīth of Al-arba`īn An-Nawawiyah with an explanation of the meaning of the questioning style contained in it. This study aims to determine the style of question and answer contained in the hadith of Al-arba`īn An-Nawawiyah and its rhetorical meaning. The approach taken by the researcher is descriptive analytical method. Among the most important findings of the researcher: that the hadith of Al-arba`īn An-Nawawiyah contain six hadiths that are Uslūb Al-Istifhām and there are ten times with meanings that are outside the original meaning, including; the meaning of inkār once, taqrīr twice, ta'ajjub once, tasywīq once, nafyu once, istib'ād twice, and amr twice.
