Abstract

Modernists believe that Sharia came to achieve certain general objectives, and neglected the forms and means of achieving these objectives. This is because these means are changeble and cannot be limited. Thus, the modernist methodology neglected context and its contextual and situational evidence, which are among the most important fundamentalist techniques for identifying the objectives of the Lawgiver. This study aims to explore the relevance between the absence of context in the modernist reading and the misunderstanding of the Qur'an and Sunnah. The phenomenon of the absence of context in modernist reading is clearly evident, whether in the realm of theory, application, or practice. Modernists are not read these texts in their entirety, within their legal context and the contextual and situational clues that surround them. Rather, it severs the beginning from the end, and the end from the beginning, bringing together the disparate and dividing the community out of fear of the reality of legitimacy. The researcher conducted this study due to the importance of understanding context for a correct understanding of the Quran and Sunnah. In this research, the researcher adopted a descriptive and analytical approach, using observation to collect data and Millis and Huberman's method for data analysis, which involves classifying, presenting, and drawing conclusions. This research demonstrated that the phenomenon of the absence of context in modernist readings of religious texts represents a major challenge to the correct understanding of the Quran and Sunnah.
