Designing Instructional Material for Teaching Listening and Speaking Skills to Indonesian Participants in the International Qur'an Recitation Competition for the Adult Category

Abstract
This study was conducted in response to a pressing need observed by the researcher: although many Indonesian participants in international Qur’an recitation competitions demonstrate excellent vocal performance, they often lack sufficient oral Arabic skills to interact effectively within the context of the competition. The objective of this research is to identify their language needs and to design a learning material that enhances their listening and speaking skills. The study employed a qualitative method with a descriptive-analytical approach, and data were collected through document analysis and interviews. The findings reveal two key results: first, participants need Arabic in four essential contexts—during travel, at the hotel, in the competition setting, and during tourism or shopping; second, the proposed learning material was designed based on these needs and includes learning objectives, content, methodology, evaluation, and instructional units built on dialogues and practical exercises. The study concludes that a well-contextualized and learner-oriented material can significantly support the development of listening and speaking skills among competition participants in international settings.
