Abstract
It is well known that language consists of sounds through which each community expresses its intentions. Sounds are one of the essential linguistic elements, and teaching them is necessary because vocabulary is made up of sounds. A deficiency in teaching sounds affects the correct acquisition of the target language’s vocabulary. Among non-native speakers who struggle with acquiring Arabic sounds are beginners. Therefore, this study aims to identify the expected phonetic errors among students of the Preparatory Linguistic Department at Al-Rayah University and ways to address them. This is done by describing the sounds of both the Arabic and Indonesian languages. In this study, the researcher presents the results of a contrastive analysis between Arabic and Indonesian sounds. The researcher followed a descriptive-analytical method in conducting this study. Through this method, the researcher studied the Arabic and Indonesian sound systems, identified and analyzed the phonetic errors made by students of the Preparatory Linguistic Department at Al-Rayah University in learning Arabic, and proposed ways to correct those errors. This study has proven that phonetic errors among beginners are divided into two categories: errors related to vowels, which are represented by the difficulty in distinguishing between short and long vowels, and phonetic difficulties related to consonants.
