Uncovering the existence of the missionary movement in Cikembar كشف وجود الحركة التنصيرية في تشيكمبار

Abstract

This study examines the Christian missionary movement in the village of Cikembar. The primary objective is to explore the early history of missionary activities in Cikembar and to assess whether such efforts persist in the present day. The research employs a qualitative methodology, utilizing data collection techniques such as in-depth interviews with community leaders, religious figures, and local residents, along with direct field observations. The findings reveal that the missionary movement in Cikembar can be categorized into three major phases. The first phase occurred during the Dutch colonial era, marked by coercive attempts to convert Muslims as part of a broader colonial strategy to exert control over the region. The second phase involved economic factors, where many Muslims converted due to material incentives, as missionaries provided economic aid and welfare support to attract new adherents. The third and current phase is characterized by the continued presence of missionary activities, though no longer through coercive means. Contemporary missionary efforts tend to be more subtle and covert, particularly through the education sector, where institutions managed by missionary groups function as indirect channels for religious dissemination.
