Abstract
Vocabulary is one of the most important elements in language instruction, and language cannot exist without it. In vocabulary teaching, an institution or educational center needs an appropriate method. Al-Yusra Institute is an educational institution that has succeeded in teaching Arabic vocabulary, as Arabic is used as a medium of instruction and for daily communication. This study aims to describe the implementation of the direct method in teaching Arabic vocabulary to junior high school students at Ma’had Alyusro Tahfizhul Qur’an in Bogor, and to identify the challenges faced by teachers in applying this method. The researcher employed a qualitative descriptive approach, using data collection techniques such as direct observation, interviews with teachers and school administrators, and questionnaires distributed to students. The findings reveal that the direct method is applied gradually and systematically, taking into account the individual differences among students. It incorporates both classroom and extracurricular activities designed to strengthen students’ vocabulary in real-life contexts. However, several challenges were identified, including difficulty in explaining vocabulary without using the native language, varying levels of student proficiency, limited instructional time, lack of teaching aids, and the heavy workload involved in repeating explanations. The study recommends enhancing teaching resources and providing regular teacher training programs to improve the effective use of the direct method.
