Da’wah-Based Family Counseling to Address the Economic Causes of Divorce by Talak and Divorce by Petition (Khulʿ) in the Islamic Family in Sukabumi
##plugins.themes.bootstrap3.article.main##
Abstract
The high rate of divorce—both initiated by husbands (t̲alāq) and wives (khulʿ)—in Indonesia, driven by various factors including economic hardship, demands comprehensive strategies. Family counseling alone often proves inadequate; thus, integrating daʿwah-based principles is proposed as a holistic solution. This qualitative descriptive study interprets monthly fluctuations in t̲alāq and khulʿ cases associated with economic conditions in Sukabumi and formulates daʿwah-oriented family counseling interventions. It combines theoretical literature review with an analysis of divorce case files from the Sukabumi Religious Court for 2023–2024. Findings indicate a surge in divorce cases at the beginning of the academic year and a marked decline during Ramadan. Based on these results, four systematic interventions are recommended: (1) enhancing financial literacy and qana‘ah (contentment) via educational training, dissemination of beneficial knowledge, and encouragement of scholarly pursuit; (2) reinforcing social cohesion through family visits, charitable assistance, and communal acts of goodwill; (3) providing economic support through partnerships with organizations and kin; and (4) fostering spiritual resilience by cultivating taqwā (piety), Remembrance (of God), patience, and tawakkul (trust in God) after sincere effort, grounded in Qurʾānic verses and Prophetic traditions. This integrated educational, preventive, and supportive framework aims to mitigate the incidence of divorce.
