Abstract

The textbook is a fundamental element in the educational process, serving as one of its essential pillars and a key reference for both teachers and learners. One of the widely used textbooks in Indonesia is Durūs al-Lughah al-‘Arabiyyah ‘alā al-Ṭarīqah al-Ḥadīthah (Lessons in Arabic Language According to the Modern Method), authored by Imam Zarkasyi and Imam Syubani. This book is considered a primary reference for teaching Arabic at the Darussalam Gontor Modern Islamic Institution. The aim of this study was to assess the suitability of this textbook in light of the criteria for a good textbook as outlined by Dr. Abdul Rahman bin Ibrahim Al-Fawzan. The researcher employed a qualitative descriptive-analytical method in this study. The findings revealed that the first volume of Durūs al-Lughah al-‘Arabiyyah consists of twenty-five lessons and aligns with most of the foundational principles of a good textbook according to Dr. Al-Fawzan. The book fulfilled eleven out of thirteen criteria, while two aspects still require further development: the phonological component of the language elements, and the listening and writing skills from the language skills category.
