Effectiveness of Supplementary Learning in Developing Reading Skills in the Era of Artificial Intelligence Advancement

Abstract

Reading is one of the essential language skills that contributes significantly to students' academic success. At Arraayah University or STIBA Arraayah, various approaches are used to develop language proficiency, including supplementary programs designed to strengthen students’ linguistic abilities. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of such a program in improving reading skills among second-year students. A mixed-methods approach was used for data collection and analysis. The sample consisted of 44 students out of a total of 78, selected through random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, and interviews, then analyzed statistically using Excel and Spreadsheet software. This study comes in the context of rapid advances in artificial intelligence, reaffirming that traditional educational models still retain their effectiveness in developing core language skills. The findings indicate that the evening supplementary program serves as an effective instructional method for enhancing students’ understanding of Arabic grammar and improving their overall language skills. It had a positive impact on reading proficiency, with an overall effectiveness rate of 75.68%. The highest improvement was observed in students’ ability to distinguish between parts of speech (83.50%), while the lowest was in identifying the main idea of a text (69.25%). Despite some challenges such as student absenteeism and limited access to learning materials, the program proved to have a significant impact on reading development and can serve as an effective model for Arabic language instruction.
