Abstract

In reality, in the field of terminology, the attention given by researchers and academics from various disciplines indicates that terminology is an essential tool and key to knowledge that cannot be overlooked. Terminology has been a focus of scholars and researchers since the early development of sciences written in Arabic, as found in the ancient Arab intellectual heritage. It is inconceivable that a scholar could discuss a scientific discipline without a tool or medium to convey the intended concepts—this tool being terminology  A student may understand the general meaning of a term but not its specific or precise meaning. For example, the word riba in Arabic linguistically derives from raba–yarbu, meaning to increase, grow, or expand. When a student hears this word, they may associate it with financial interest as defined in Islamic jurisprudence, but they may not understand its linguistic meaning. Consequently, when using the word in a sentence, the student might apply its technical (jurisprudential) meaning rather than its linguistic one. If the student knew the linguistic meaning, they could provide an example like “Riba al-walad fi Jakarta” which means “The child grew up and developed in Jakarta”. This study aims to identify the legal terms found in the third volume of Al-Mu’tamad fi al-Fiqh al-Shafi’i, explain their meanings, and explore how these terms can be used to enrich the Arabic vocabulary of non-native speakers. The research employs a qualitative method, which primarily focuses on words and expressions throughout the research process: collecting scientific data, analyzing it, and presenting the results. It is a library-based study, where relevant data is gathered, organized, presented, and then concluded. The study found 33 terminologies in the third volume of Al-Mu’tamad fi al-Fiqh al-Shafi’i, which were analyzed solely from a linguistic perspective, using Arabic dictionaries and other relevant references related to the topic.
