Abstract
This study aims to identify the imperative and prohibitive styles and their rhetorical meanings in the book Ayyuha al-Walad by Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī. The study involves identifying the various imperative and prohibitive expressions found in Ayyuha al-Walad and explaining their meanings. It employs a descriptive-analytical method, which thoroughly examines the subject by tracing, collecting, presenting, and analyzing the styles of command and prohibition within the text. The results of the study show that the book Ayyuha al-Walad contains 67 imperative expressions, including 3 in their original (literal) meaning, and 64 with figurative meanings intended for rhetorical purposes. These include: 43 for guidance (irshād), 14 for supplication (duʿā'), 3 for threats, 2 for honor, and 2 for wishes (tamannī). As for the 14 prohibitive expressions, they include: 3 in the original sense, 8 for guidance, 1 for supplication, 1 for dislike/discouragement, and 1 for threat.
