Abstract

One of the main challenges faced by learners in studying the Arabic language is the difficulty they encounter in understanding idiomatic vocabulary, which can often be confusing—especially for non-native speakers. Many students suffer from a lack of vocabulary in Arabic, which limits their ability to fully comprehend literary and religious texts. This challenge becomes even greater when it comes to idiomatic expressions that cannot be translated literally, thereby reducing their motivation to read Arabic texts and decreasing their interest in Islamic knowledge. The objectives of this study are: 1) To explain the idiomatic vocabulary found in Kitab al-Adhkar by Imam al-Nawawi that contributes to developing speaking skills among beginner non-native learners, using the Book of Prayer as a case study; and 2) To explore how this idiomatic vocabulary can be used to enhance speaking skills among beginner non-native learners, again using the Book of Prayer as a model. The researcher employed a descriptive-analytical method with document analysis as the primary tool for data collection. The main source was Kitab al-Adhkar, from which the idiomatic expressions were extracted and analyzed. The researcher himself acted as the key instrument in collecting and analyzing the data through deep reading and evaluation of the texts according to the study’s objectives. The Book of Prayer from Kitab al-Adhkar was selected as a practical example for analysis. The research findings revealed that 42 idiomatic expressions were identified from the Book of Prayer in Kitab al-Adhkar by Imam al-Nawawi. These expressions have proven beneficial in enhancing speaking skills for beginner non-native learners. Some proposed ways of incorporating them into teaching include the use of dialogues, language exercises, or the creation of a simple glossary that includes the idiomatic expressions along with their meanings and usage. In conclusion, the study found that these 42 idiomatic expressions play an important role in developing oral language skills for beginners, and they can be effectively utilized through communicative and contextual teaching approaches.
