Abstract
Many Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia teach Arabic and require their students to speak Arabic. However, many of them still employ qawaid wa al-tarjamah fî ta’lîm al-nahwu, which is not known for developing speaking skills. Therefore, the researcher investigated the effect of qawaid wa al-tarjamah fî ta’lîm al-nahwu on students' speaking skills in one of these institutions to reveal the relationship between this method and speaking proficiency. The researcher chose the Second State Islamic Senior High School of Padang Panjang as the research subject. This research used a quantitative approach due to its data analysis method. In terms of application, the researcher conducted fieldwork using a descriptive method to explain the existing situation or problem. The researcher found that this school applied qawaid wa al-tarjamah fî ta’lîm al-nahwu in the classroom through inductive and deductive methods, and used translation in several instances, not entirely. The researcher concluded that qawaid wa al-tarjamah fî ta’lîm al-nahwu had a moderate effect on students' speaking skills in the school, regardless of other factors that might influence students' speaking skills.
