Abstract
Listening and speaking are among the most important skills in learning Arabic as a foreign language. Developing these skills contributes to improving students’ communication abilities. Therefore, it is essential to study the effectiveness of extracurricular language activities in enhancing these two skills, especially in a context like Indonesia. This study aimed to understand and reveal the linguistic activities that develop listening and speaking skills among female students at STIBA Ar-Raayah Sukabumi, by identifying the types of these activities, understanding their goals, and how they are implemented in the educational environment outside the classroom, with the goal of improving listening and speaking skills. The study also sought to uncover the obstacles and challenges that the students face in these linguistic activities. The researcher used a descriptive-analytical method by analyzing and describing the linguistic activities in the students' environment. Data were collected through observation and interviews to achieve the desired results. The study reached three main findings: First, linguistic activities for developing listening skills include lectures, language enhancement programs, lesson explanations in the book "Jami' al-Durus," and watching Arabic films. Second, linguistic activities for developing speaking skills include speech delivery, the art of speaking, memorizing texts, and language enhancement programs. Third, there are several obstacles faced by the students, such as lack of self-confidence, shyness, inadequate technological resources, limited time, unclear curricula, difficulties in speaking, limited comprehension during listening, reliance on translation, scarce opportunities for practical application, and difficulties in memorizing texts. The study showed that extracurricular language activities contribute to the development of listening and speaking skills, despite challenges such as lack of self-confidence, limited resources, and time constraints. The study recommends strengthening these activities and providing appropriate support to improve their outcomes.
